Welcome to The Complete National Geographic for Macintosh.
1. System Requirements
If your system meets these minimum requirements, you can use the Complete National Geographic:
Processor: 68030 33MHz (such as LC550, Quadra 605, Performa 460 or Power Book 180c)
System Software 7.5 or higher
8 MB RAM
25 MB free disk space
640 x 480 monitor resolution with 256 colors
Dual speed CD-ROM drive
2. Installation
Run the "Easy Install" to install the National Geographic Complete application with a minimum amount of disc space.
Select "Custom Install" from the Install menu and then click on "Enhanced Install" to install the National Geographic Complete application with all of its components.
3. Tips
Here are some tips that will help you run the Complete National Geographic:
• On a 640x480 monitor, you can get to the Finder by dragging the National Geographic window to the side and clicking on the desktop.
• If you use the Remove feature from the CD ROM, the User Information/Data files will not be deleted. You may move these files to the trash after the remove process is complete.
• Click the mouse button to skip over videos.
• Some disks do not always cover the entire year as listed. The year is continued on the following CD; this maximizes space usage on each CD.
• If you rotate an image and find that the page must be resized, try to resize the page first.
• Pages and Pictures may be viewed or printed. If you need to improve the print quality try checking "Optimize for Text" in the print dialog to enhance text legibility, or check the settings in your print driver.
• The Articles Viewed window is only available from the Search screen.
4. Memory Usage
The Complete National Geographic may use 5 MB RAM for normal pages, and up to 16MB of RAM to display its largest foldouts at the highest quality.
Take the following steps to make the maximum memory available to The Complete National Geographic:
• It may be necessary to quit other applications in order to give The Complete National Geographic the memory it needs. Each application that is running takes up some memory that The Complete National Geographic could be using. For optimal performance, we recommend that you quit other applications before starting The Complete National Geographic.
• Try increasing the "Preferred Size" in the Finder Get Info window. The largest foldouts can require up to 16 megabytes of memory to display in millions of colors.
•If your system has only 8 MB of RAM, you will need to turn on virtual memory to load the largest foldouts.
To do this, go into the Memory control panel, and click the “On” button next to the Virtual Memory section. Then use the arrows next to the virtual memory control to adjust the amount of memory you wish to have. You should set this value to at least 12 MB, if not higher. If you are loading a lot of extensions and control panels, you may need to increase this value further.
•It may also help to reduce the disk cache size and turn off any RAM disks. In Apple’s Memory control panel are options for controlling the disk cache size and for creating RAM disks. If you have created a RAM disk, turn it off and restart your system before running. Reducing the disk cache to 96k or less can also help, at the expense of slower disk access.
If the program is still low on memory, it may display images in 256 color mode, even if your monitor is set to "thousands" or "millions" of colors.
5. Printing
Certain print drivers allow you to view images on screen before, or instead of printing. Since the images can take up large amount of memory, these print preview features may not work or may be unstable.
6. Web
When clicking on the "Web" button, The Complete National Geographic will prompt you to select a web browser if you have not already done so (or if it can't find your previously selected web browser). The file dialog will recognize one of the following browsers:
Netscape
Cyberdog
ms internet explorer
MacWeb
NCSA Mosaic
Spyglass mosaic
AOL Browser
If you have a different browser, you can select it with the Internet Config application, included in your Complete National Geographic Installation.
You need an Internet Service Provider to use the Internet Link.
